Albrecht Durer revolutionized the century-old craft of the woodcut. His prints were innovative in their large size and in the clarity and detailed precision of his technique. This particular plate comes from the original edition of Durer's Life of the Virgin published in 1511. Durer's series of prints were bestsellers and made him, in this new age of the printing press, immediately famous all over Europe.
